At present, the article states: "During the Second World War the city of Kunming was prepared as a National Redoubt in case the temporary capital in Chongqing fell, an elaborate system of caves to serve as offices, barracks and factories was prepared but never utilised. Kunming was to have served again in this role during the ensuing Chinese Civil War, but the Nationalist garrison switched sides and joined the Communists. Instead Taiwan would become the last redoubt and home of the Chinese Nationalist government, a role it fulfills to this day.[13]"

Reference 13 is to an old Time magazine piece, curated on web.archive.org. While it does confirm that Nationalist garrison switched sides, it would be good to have more detail. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any more articles about the incident. I note that the "Southwestern China Campaign" article is still to be written. The history of the Chinese Civil war is poorly documented in general (not just on Wikipedia), especially away from the major campaigns. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WestNab (talkcontribs) 14:14, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Questions

[edit]

What is the source of '2km plateau'? It is definitely larger than 2km .. prat 06:35, 2004 Jan 26 (UTC)

what is the language/dialect of Kunming?

The current (29 January 2008) entry says:"Kunming consists of an old walled city, a modern commercial suburb, and a residential and university section." I lived in Kunming for two years and never saw any part of an old city wall. Is there a section of Kunming that is walled?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.243.36.202 (talk) 22:26, 29 January 2008 (UTC) You're correct. Kunming once had a walled city within it's domains, but that time has long past. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmnage (talkcontribs) 12:59, 28 May 2008 (UTC) Not entirely accurate, the city wall was mostly demolished during 1970s, due to the special political environment of China of the time, many places of interest was demolished such as "Jinma Biji fang" (Golden Horse and Jade Cock torii), for the urban spreading. Luckily, the last segment was preserved in Yuantong Zoo.[reply]

internet usage

[edit]

Can someone please describe common Internet usage habits in Kunming? To what extent are News Reading/ Social Networking/ used electronics buy&sell Dating/ Researching /Etc. widespread over there ? --189.124.176.175 (talk) 04:25, 9 March 2009 (UTC)----[reply]

Relevance

[edit]

The external reference for Father Ma Yingling in the History section is completely unrelated to Kunming. It should be replaced with a relevant link.

Why is the appoitment of a bishop relevant to Kunming's History? Christianity is of no importance to average Chinese' life. I will remove that part.Would the position 25.05132,102.70161 be correct ?

Since Kunming is the largest city in Yunnan and since Yunnan is the southernmost province in China, I am confused by your map showing a red province in the far north of some larger country?

[edit]

Reply;

BTW, whoever wrote everything above, they really are bad at writing questions.

I am from Kunming, and I will try to answer all of the questions.

Kunming has their own dialect, it is a slight different version of Mandarin, since Mandarin speakers could sometimes understand Kunming people's dialect.

The red is not a province in the map, it is where Kunming is located in the province of Yunnan. You should look at the map more detailed. The red is the area and district of Kunming.

There also seems like to be 24 copies of Montpellier, France as Kunming's sister city, though Kunming is not Montpellier, France's sister city. Therefore, I will remove that from the article.

Also, the picture titled, "Green Lake Park (Cui Hu Gong Yuan)" is incorrect. I believe that picture was most likely taken at the Western Hills(西山). It cannot possibly be the Green Lake, I live right behind it. Can an administrator please remove this picture? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmnage (talkcontribs) 13:01, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kunming lead poisoning?

[edit]

Under the Demographics section:

"It has been reported that as many as 60% of the population suffers from chronic lead poisoning due to lack of quality control in the city's plumbing infrastructure; symptoms associated include psychopathy and paranoia."

The source for this claim, citation 16, links to an article in Chinese about a case where 200 schoolchildren were poisoned in Dongchuan District. However, there is no 60% figure, nor does it mention lead poisoning among the general population at all.

Chinese article, citation 16: http://business.sohu.com/20090905/n266479663.shtml

A quick Google search for the 60% figure turned up this website, which refers to the same poisoning incident in Dongchuan and quotes an AP article that is no longer accessible:

http://www.gokunming.com/en/blog/item/1100/chinas_newest_lead_poisoning_investigation_underway_in_kunming

"The Associated Press has information about a recent government study in which it was found that up to 60 percent of children in mining areas in Yunnan are suffering from lead poisoning."

Seeing as this doesn't match the original claim (60% of children in mining areas within the province vs. 60% of the general population in Kunming), I've removed this reference and citation from the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:8400:2802:10:250:56FF:FEAB:33A8 (talk) 08:05, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rank in China

[edit]

The infobox for this article lists Kunming's population as the 16th largest in China. However, clicking on that link takes you to this page where Kunming is listed as the 23rd largest city in China including municipalities, or the 19th largest city excluding municipalities. Almost none of the other large cities in China (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Dongguan, Chengdu, Foshan, Nanjing, Shenyang, Xi'an, Harbin, Suzhou, Qingdao, Dalian, Zhengzhou, Shantou, Jinan, Changchun) have a "rank in China" section in their infobox. The only city in the list larger than Kunming that does is Hangzhou, which lists a "national rank" of 5th, despite either being 13th or 9th depending on the inclusion of municipalities. China's fourth least developed province based on disposable income per capita

[edit]

Why do you feel the need to emphasize how poor the province is in the very first sentence? It doesn't really say anything about the capital city itself. --89.246.121.87 (talk) 11:39, 18 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
